Power Woman

Name: Heidi Mankoff
Profession: Mortgage Broker
Age: 31

Dream Job:
As long as I continue helping others, I'm happy.

Tell us more about yourself (did you go to college, where did you grow up, what are your hobbies, etc):
I grew up in Santa Clarita, CA and obtained my undergraduate degree at Whittier College in International Business and Spanish.  After moving around the country a bit (I spent a little over a year in Florida and then a year up in Washington State) I came back to southern California where I now live and work.  I'm currently finishing up my MBA at California State University Northridge, and am training for my first marathon, so I don't have much free time!  However, I'm a huge fan of "Grey's Anatomy" and love taking my dog, Einstein, to the park.

Describe your “average day”:
My average day includes running, meeting with clients, checking in on loans in process, and either taking classes or attending non-profit or networking events in the evening.

Have you won any awards or been featured in any articles? If so, which ones and for what?
I have won several awards for my sales production--but am most proud of the awards I've won for my work in the community.  In the just past few years I've won the "Rotarian of the Year Award 2006-2007" from the Granada Hills Rotary Club, the "Jaycee of the Year Award 2006-2007" from the San Fernando Valley Jaycees and the San Fernando Valley Business Journal's 2008 "40 Under 40 Award".
Advice for young women in business: Follow your passion and don't be afraid to celebrate your successes.

Where did you come up with the concept for your business?
I began my career in the mortgage/real estate industry about eight years ago.  I had a significant other in the military at the time, and knew I needed to find a career that would allow me to relocate every three or four years (and not start over!).  I've been hooked ever since.  And, I'm humbled each day knowing that my clients have placed their trust in me to handle the biggest loan they'll probably ever obtain.
What would be your financial advice to anyone who is young and looking to start their own business, or venture into another career?  Don't be afraid to take a few risks!

Do you have any role models?
My incredibly strong and amazing grandparents and parents!

What are your future goals?
I'd like to earn my PhD and perhaps (one day!) become a college professor.

How can we help you grow your business?
Spread the word!  It's not impossible to own your first home in Southern California (or other notably expensive venues around the country!).  There are so many assistance programs available to first-time-home-buyers.  My job is to help connect buyers to these programs, so they can not only realize the American Dream but can begin making wise financial decisions that will one day enable them to reach financial independence.
