Some of you may have read last month's article on ways for new moms to save a dime. After sharing my personal financial history and tips with you, I thought I should probably formally introduce myself.
While I'm not married, I have been in a long-term relationship that is coming up on its tenth year and we have a 3-year-old son together.
In my immediate family, I've always been considered the "educated" one. I started working at age 15 and haven't stopped since. I worked my way through college at night (only took a mere seven years!) and was the first one in the family to earn a Bachelor's degree. I've managed to maintain a successful career in marketing and even earned my MBA a few years ago.
Education and money are certainly not a given in my family. I was raised by a single mother and money was always tight growing up. We moved about twice a year and my dad passed away when I was in the eighth grade. I have two "baby" sisters that are 11 and 14 years younger than I am, so I tend to be the go-to person for a lot of personal issues, but mainly financial matters.
Up until now I've been able to feign my financial knowledge pretty darn well. My sisters have learned from experience that I balance my checkbook about twice a week and I never throw away a receipt. I know enough to keep myself from going under financially. But here's the thing: I know nothing about how to get ahead financially. And the worst part is that I know exactly what I don't know. For instance, I know that I should invest. (I went to business school for crying out loud!). I know that I need a college fund for my child. I know I should get life insurance. I know that I have a 401K, but I have no idea what it really means.
Basically, ladies, my financial front has worn thin. I have finally admitted to myself that I don't know the first thing about how to manage my finances for the long term. I can balance today's checkbook forever, but that's not helping me plan for my family's future.
When I learned about SLC Insurance Services, especially after knowing the character of Shannah and Stanley, I was so excited. I know that I can ask them anything and I trust them with my family's financial future. While it's difficult to admit that I don't personally have control of my finances, it is also very freeing to know that I have a wonderful resource in SLC Insurance Services. Shannah and Stanley have my family's best interest at heart. Do they know about yours?
